Geo-Blogging (Google Earth)

About Geo-blogging with Google Earth:

Blog in three dimensions! Geo-blogging is a super-simple way to link geographical locations with time-based blogging. How is this possible? Geo-blogging draws on the power of blojsom's metadata and flavour chains, and taps into Google Earth's network feed capability.

Cool! How do I get started?
Create a "Google Earth flavour" for your blog (You must do this first before anything else)
KML vm Generator (Mac OS X) - Hand crafting your KML vm files (Windows - Linux - Unix)
Export your Google Earth files
KML Exporter (Mac OS X) - Hand-crafting a metadata file
Post your blog entry with embedded Google Earth metadata
KML import - for ecto (Mac OS X) - GEB Long Lat - for ecto (Mac OS X) - Google Earth Geo-Blog Snapshot - for ecto (Mac OS X)
Work in progress KML import - for Journler (Mac OS X) and GEB Long Lat - for Journler (Mac OS X) more info about Journler.

There seems to be a bug with Google Earth 4.0.2694 and 4.0.2413 (beta) regarding viewing categories. I've tested the templates with Google Earth 4.0.2093 (beta), 4.0.2091 (beta) and version 3 and all seems to be fine.

Can I see a live example?
Sure you can! Fire up Google Earth and go to the menu bar > Add > Network Link - then copy and paste this URL into the 'Location' box - http://blogs.rave.ac.uk/blojsom/blog/aburt/?flavor=kml2

FAQ:
So what can I do and can't do?

GeoRSS (Yahoo maps)

About GeoRSS:
This is a cool way for other people to subscribe to your Geo-Blog using GeoRSS. One of the cool things about Yahoo maps is that it supports GeoRSS. So you can say create a web page with a Yahoo embedded map in that web page, with pulls on a GeoRSS feed feed from some ware else ie. your blog. Also once again the cool thing is that the same tools above KML import - for ecto (Mac OS X), KML Exporter (Mac OS X) and GEB Long Lat - for ecto (Mac OS X), can be used to create your Geo-Blog entries! Any entries you have created in the past using the tools above will automatical work as well.

Can I see a live example?
Yep shore you can see the latest entries on my blog but on my dot mac site. The page on my dot mac site is pulling it's data from my blog from this link - http://blogs.rave.ac.uk/blojsom/blog/aburt/?flavor=georss.

How do I get started?
First of all, if you wish to create a web page using a Yahoo Map with in that page, then you'll need a Yahoo Map API key before getting busy. Then take a look at Yahoo's GeoRSS page.

If you wish just to add GeoRSS flavor to you blog, so that other people can simple subcribe to your blog then click here.

GPX (Viewing Geo-Blog entries on your GPS)

About GPX:
GPX is a de-facto XML standard that is use on GPS devices to show waypoints, tracks and routes. In this case I've created a template that pulls on the geo meta data in your blog entry and repurpose it as GPX. A educational example: A staff member started Geo-Blogging must see places for a field trip, then students could download that geo data from the staff members blog to there hand held GPS, to then easily see art galleries, museums etc... that they geo-blogged about.

Safety note:

At this point I also urge you to not to take GPX date from 3rd partys at face value. Thus check out the location on a map first before speeding off into the great out doors, be it in the urban or countryside environment.

Can I see a live example?
Yep shore you can see the latest entries on my blog as GPX click on this link - http://blogs.rave.ac.uk/blojsom/blog/aburt/?flavor=gpx.

How do I get started?
You'll first need to install the GPX template onto your Blog click here.

With your GPX templates installed you'll then want to get your GPX data on to your GPS. In this example I'll be using GPSBabel which a very cool open source application that will run on many operating systems, there is also a GUI versions for Mac OS X and Windows XP. So let's get started - Click here.

Geo-Blog to GPS
Geo-Blog to GPS is a free application that harnesses the power of GPSBabel to be able to upload your Geo-Blog entries from your Blog to your GPS.

the nbsp's i've moved to the end to make sure it doesn't wrap the rest of the page around the image (the bit including and below the children list. Maybe there is a better way. Rich text mode eats nbsp's so you'll need to add them back in.
